Stripe S700 & S710 Terminals

What this guide covers: the Stripe S700 and S710 card readers, how to buy or hire one, how to set it up, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Who it's for: charity staff who want a standalone card reader for a fixed giving point (on a desk or counter) or to carry around at events.

About the readers

The S700 and S710 are Stripe's all-in-one card readers. The GiveTap Payments app runs directly on them, so you don't need a phone or tablet alongside. You can use them handheld, or on the optional dock, which screws into a desk or counter.

Battery: up to 15 hours active use, 140 hours standby. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours. Battery life is Stripe's estimate and varies with use.

How the two readers differ

S700: Wi-Fi, Ethernet (with the dock or a hub) and offline mode
S710: everything the S700 does, plus 4G (mobile data)

The GiveTap Payments app on the reader works the same way as our iOS and Android apps. It lets you:

Show your logo, header image and colours throughout the donation flow
Show your own donation amounts
Collect Gift Aid details
Send branded email receipts
Track the income raised on the device
Password protect the donation flow, so donors stay locked in it (kiosk mode)

Buying or hiring a reader

Buying: the S700 and S710 are £229+VAT. The optional dock is £39+VAT*. To order, log in to your Stripe account and go to the 'Terminal' section before visiting the store.

Hiring: GiveTap clients can hire readers by the week:

Stripe S710/S700: £25+VAT per device per week
Stripe BBPOS WisePad 3: £10+VAT per device per week

You pay the return postage (Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For). To hire, fill in the form at givetap.co.uk/card-reader-rental and we'll confirm availability and delivery.

Fees: Stripe's in-person processing fee is 1.4% + 10p per payment. GiveTap's platform fee (2.5% + VAT) also applies.

Setting up your reader

Charge it. Plug the reader in with a USB-C cable, or put it on the dock. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours, so charge it the day before your event.
Get the GiveTap Payments app installed. Email support@givetap.co.uk and our team will install the app on your reader remotely. If you hired a reader from us, tell us if it doesn't already have the app.
Connect it to the internet. Use Wi-Fi, or Ethernet through the dock or a hub. On the S710 you can also use 4G (see below).
Choose your campaign. The reader uses your QR + Card Reader campaigns, in the same way as the mobile app. See GiveTap Payments – Mobile App.
Turn on kiosk mode if the reader will be left on a counter, so donors can't leave the donation flow.
Take a test donation before your event, so you know everything works.

Using 4G on the S710

4G is not switched on by default. You switch it on in your Stripe Terminal Location settings. Stripe charges £7 per month for the data plan, and only in months where the reader uses at least 5MB of data.

Using the dock

The optional dock (£39+VAT) turns the reader into a countertop giving point. It screws into a desk or counter, charges the reader, and gives you an Ethernet connection. You can lift the reader off the dock to carry it around.

Offline mode

If the reader loses its connection, it keeps taking donations. It sends them securely once it reconnects. Reconnect the reader to the internet as soon as you can after your event so all donations go through.

Troubleshooting

The reader won't turn on: charge it with the USB-C cable or the dock, then try again.
No internet connection: check the Wi-Fi details, or try Ethernet through the dock. On the S710, check 4G is switched on in your Stripe Terminal Location settings. Donations taken while offline will send once the reader reconnects.
The GiveTap app isn't on the reader: email support@givetap.co.uk and we'll install it remotely.
I can't see my campaign: check it's a QR + Card Reader campaign and that it's active.
